Ethiopia, Guji - Sasaba station
Washed Heirloom
Pineapple, peach, strawberry
In the green highlands of southern Ethiopia, winding roads lead through the hills of Kercha to Sasaba washing station. Here, smallholder farmers grow coffee on shaded plots, surrounded by forest trees and enset plants.
Founded in 2005 by Tsegay Hagos Tesfaye, Sasaba brings together coffee from more than 500 surrounding farms. Its success is closely connected to its growers: the station provides training, rewards exceptional quality with premiums, and supports farmers through loans during the lean rainy months.
For washed coffees, ripe cherries are pulped and fermented for approximately 48-72 hours before drying on raised beds for around 7-8 days. After drying, the coffee travels to Addis Ababa for final preparation and sorting before export.
Trabocca first tasted Sasaba’s coffees in 2012 and began working with the station in 2013, drawn to their clean sweetness and pronounced stone-fruit character.
